Rumour has it that one of these men was Edward Smith-Stanley, the 14th Earl of Derby, who had the Oxford repurposed so that he could wear it. From here, the Derby was born, featuring eyelet tabs that are stitched on top of the shoe’s vamp, making them roomier.
