Lace Up Shoes

When it comes to buying a lace up shoe, you might be surprised as to how much variety there is. Contrary to what you may have thought, lacing systems can differ considerably depending on the style and purpose of the shoe, and this affects both the appearance and the fit so it's important to know what you're looking for. Oxfords, for example, traditionally feature a closed lacing system. This is where the sides of the shoe emerge from the top and are held tightly together by sleek, neat laces. This system is considered the height of sophistication and ideal for pairing with formal attire. In contrast, an open laced shoe has separate side pieces folded into the tongue and held together by laces. An example of an open laced shoe can be found in our Brogue collection. These can be either formal or casual depending on the make, and can certainly add a whole new dimension to the shoe. 

Some people find that an open lacing system is more suitable if they have a high instep. The laces themselves should also be considered. Some of the designs we have on offer come with contrasting laces, such as those offered with the Jeffery West Goodyear welted brogues. Other times, the laces blend nicely with the shoe itself and can barely be seen, giving the overall presentation a more seamless appearance.
