Any two dimensional measuring tool like a ruler is only an approximation of your size. Across different manufacturers the lasts and patterns vary slightly so sizing may also vary as a result. We recommend you try your shoes on a carpeted surface to avoid marking the soles and uppers first to test the fit before wear.
I'm always a little skeptical when buying long boots online because my calves and ankles don't always fit comfortably, but fortunately these boots fitted a treat. The circumference of the top of the boot in my size 5's (they said 38 on the box) were around 35cm but with the elastic, you could easily add another 3-4cm when putting them on.
Not only that, I found the leather to be soft and the sole was quite chunky and felt sturdy. I've only worn them for a month so can't say for sure how they'll last, but so far no complaints. I would recommend them to friends.
