Boat shoes were created out of necessity in 1935 when a man named Paul A. Sperry from New Haven, Connecticut, was out walking with his dog in the icy weather. He observed the fact that his dog could run across icy terrain without slipping. Upon inspection of his dog’s paws, the idea came to him to cut thin slips into the soles of his shoes to obtain a better grip. This formed the basis by which boat shoes would be developed on. In the 1970s, boat shoes were worn in all climates and by a wide variety of people, and continue to be popular to this day.
The waxy brown boat shoe by Barbour is made from the highest quality brown leather with beautifully rich colouring.
